A (H1N1) or not A (H1N1), that is the question
The kids are both down. Actually, that's not entirely true, Sara's already up again. As usual their "flu-like" symptoms seem to last no more than two days, and Sara had an identical illness about 6 weeks ago. I made the dorky mistake of checking Sara's symptoms on the national pandemic database--just cause we were both so bored on monday--and got swept up in an online diagnosis which ended in Sara being authorized for antiviral treatment and given an official authorization number. (We both went... WHAAAT???) Unfortunately (or fortunately) all the collection points are in England, so we were instructed (by the Deus Ex Machina that is the National Pandemic Online Hotline or whatever) to contact our GP, which we did, feeling rather foolish. And so it was confirmed that Sara has had flu-like symptoms for two days and should stay at home drinking cough syrup and paracetemol. Which is, of course, what we were doing anyway.

So then the next day (yesterday) Mark started complaining of aches and pains and they BOTH stayed home from school. Mark gave me a bit of a fright mid-afternoon when his temp spiked to 103 F. But he was perfectly coherent the whole time, and we stripped him down and dosed him with Calpol and ice water, and he was fine. He is home today as well, poor guy, complaining mostly of headache, but not otherwise very poorly.

But--BUT. As I was tapping away at the computer this afternoon, I got a message from Sara's school (this being her first day back) which begins thusly:

"As you may be aware a significant proportion of the school have a viral illness which may or may not be Influenza A (H1N1), also known as 'swine flu'. Those pupils who have developed symptoms during the day have been sent home, many more have not come into school."

And so they are instituting their Pandemic Actions Stage 1, meaning they are going to Practice Social Distancing "as far as is possible in a school"--and are shutting down all clubs in and out of school, after school activities, etc. from tomorrow.

And there was me being so off-hand about the whole thing!

Incidentally, the huge advantgage of having kids who never, ever watch TV, is that they really enjoy a day of slobbing in front of the TV when they're sick. It's like a special treat. They watch the dumbest stuff--In the Night Garden and Bits & Bobs. Bet that doesn't mean anything to any of you unless you're in the UK and have a toddler in the house.

oh BTW for those of you who KNOW WHO YOU ARE, I have found a brief Morgause/Medraut/Lleu fanfic. eeeeeeeeeeeeh

LOLOLOLOL LINK ME

Honestly, H1N1 is not that big a deal and people are blowing it so out of proportion. It's just like normal flu, only more virulent. I think if they do have it, you've been doing exactly the right thing anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much.

i see now that I have made this sound a lot juicier than it actually is. Alas, it's really just Morgause/Medraut + Medraut/Lleu. Tame!

hahaha

actually, that thought had already passed thru my diseased brain. "There's nothing here that I haven't already implied pretty clearly, if you read between the lines. hmmmmm"

Morgause would totally get in on that.

It's interesting! I like her style, although I'm not really sure that Medraut sounds like the Medraut in my head. Huh.

Still, lololololol. You have fangirls.
E Wein: Medraut[info]eegatland on November 13th, 2009 09:40 am (UTC)
no kidding, i have fangirls! ♥

i know what you mean about that medraut--a bit too flaily.
Soujin[info]rainbowjehan on November 13th, 2009 03:34 pm (UTC)
Yesss. It's interesting--she said she hasn't read past Winter Prince, and I wonder if part of my impressions don't come from having read Medraut as a father.

World's Most Unyielding Parent. (I have this very ridiculous question I pose myself, when I am reading Anne and Reeve Lindbergh's memoirs: Charles A Lindbergh or Medraut: which would you rather have as a dad? discuss.)

I always want to go and post "NOBODY DIES" on these blogs, but it was written two years ago and I am sure I would scare them to death.

I realize I don't actually know you and only popped up once to say hello and be fannish on GoodReads, but I had to peek at this fanfiction, and I am left with a burning question. How does a rock open to give birth to a sparrow? Is this common? Is this some allusion I'm just missing?

But I confess, I wrote a vocab story in high school that was more than a little influenced by The Winter Prince... and then I stood up in front of my tenth grade class and read this vaguely incestuous, heady brew and felt sort of sophisticated...

So perhaps I should be nicer about the sparrow thing. :)

Yeah, they're making a huge deal of it here as well. Yes, we don't want to spread the sickness around, but they're taking it a bit beyond that IMHO. They have these signs all over, saying 'IF YOU'RE FEELING SICK DON'T LEAVE HOME EXCEPT TO GO TO THE DOCTOR' etc. Well, duh.
E Wein: harriet crabby[info]eegatland on November 11th, 2009 07:29 pm (UTC)
here all the doctors' offices and clinics have signs on the door that say "If you think you have flu, please go home--do not come into the clinic"!

I think I've already had it -- I had Mark's version, with the massive, nasty headache, and the soaring fever. The cough went away after two weeks. I just thought it was the regular 'flu, but apparently I Have Had It. *Oooh.*

Agh. I hope the sick chicks are well again soon. Funny isn't how they love silly TV that's too young for them, when they're poorly.
E Wein[info]eegatland on November 11th, 2009 11:08 pm (UTC)
thank you, they seem to be rallying! Sara's rather proud of herself for being among the first to fall... means she's now one of the Last Men Standing. She came home reporting that they have gone crazy with antiseptic gel and are making everybody wash their hands before each class.
Ink with a K: explore[info]tigertrapped on November 12th, 2009 06:15 am (UTC)
I'm so glad they're fighting back so fast. Kids are amazing. I suspect Milly would be jealous of anyone in her class who bet her to the bug. Good for Sarah!
Estara[info]estara on November 11th, 2009 10:15 pm (UTC)
*crossing her fingers and pressing her thumbs* I hope it all turns out well. Two kids at my school and in one of my classes also have gotten the new virus, but so far it hasn't spread. I'm trying to get inoculated but my doctor hasn't got the vaccine as of yet.
E Wein[info]eegatland on November 11th, 2009 11:09 pm (UTC)
good luck with the vaccine. so far we know of one person who's had it, a girl in sara's class who's diabetic. They seem to be doling it out very sparingly!

my roommate caught swine flu a few weeks back, and nobody seemed particularly concerned - not the doctors nor my rommate herself. :) "stay home and drink lots of fluids" was the general advice, but they've been saying that since before the dawn of time!
E Wein[info]eegatland on November 12th, 2009 09:12 am (UTC)
mark is still down (day 3) but he has really taken on board the "drink lots of fluids" advice (he overheard Tim talking to the GP when we had to make that official call about sara)

he is parked in front of toddler tv again. i wish I had the excuse.
