christmas in scotland (attn Pl@ymobil fans)
IrnBru seems to be inextricably linked to Christmas here for some reason, and ice rinks, so my holiday photos run in an endless loop of ice and light and bubble-gum flavored soda. Or whatever the heck that flavor is.

The supermarkets are ready!!

irnbru

And the ice rink at Dundee. Every. Single Item. on this menu just cracks me up.

If the ice rink cafe is closed (which it often is at 7.30 a.m. when we turn up for Sara's lesson), you can still get IrnBru in the vending machines:

We spent a lot of time at the Dundee ice rink in December, because the Ice Skating Club was gearing up for their winter extravaganza, Shrek on Ice (Sara was a soldier). Here's the background. I stared at it for a long time, trying to figure out which mythical country it was supposed to be, till suddenly I recognized the castle. It's EDINBURGH.

OK, moving on then? Here we are back at home. I have ordered old-fashioned glass bulb Xmas lights from Noma, the oldest worldwide distributor of Xmas lights, est. 1926. These lights are so freaking beautiful they make me cry. Not a single picture I can take does them justice. But anyway here's our tree with just the lights on:

... And here it is fully decorated:

... And here it is in daylight, with Playmobil Christmas Tree Village added by Mark (at my request):

xmas tree & village

It is a SCOTTISH Christmas Tree Village, with a CURLING POND. Surely someone is drinking an IrnBru in that chalet.

AND THE CURLING POND. (though the figure in the back is an ice skater):

Sara's contribution, created in Home Ec. Even our gingerbread house is Scottish - yes, that is a Saltire!

Have a happy holiday season - don't worry, we're enjoying it without IrnBru despite the pressure.

Happy Christmas
I didn't know Playmobile made a Scottish version. For some reason I thought curling was Canadian. Some people play it in Maine too. I miss those Playmobile Christmases but not stepping on the pieces. Those old fashioned lights do look lovely on your tree. Now that high school exams are over, my daughter will help me decorate ours.

Re: Happy Christmas
well, I'd say curling is most definitely Scottish, though transferred to northerly climes in general, and Wikipedia avers that the word "curling" first appears in print in Perth, which is where we live!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curling

(This is the first I've looked up the wikipedia entry, and it cracks me up that it says curling is related to shuffleboard in the very first paragraph.)

The Playmobil curlers were actually our own invention. We used the ice from the Dinosaur Expedition set, and I think that the curling stone is actually from the stable/pony set... I won't say what!

My kids are wonderful helpers as far as tree decoration goes.

Thank you for this view into your home. I hadn't known about stovies, but the internet reveals all, and now I've learned something new today.

my pleasure. Forget stovies, I confess I didn't even known about cheesey chips until I came here.

Oh! Your tree is most loverly!

The Saltire on the gingerbread house is, of course, awesome, and makes us a bit homesick. I'm still deeply envious of your curling. We have GOT to get back in winter one day!

The backdrop for the icecapades is THE BEST. I saw the castle, but the rest of the buildings look like they're from Ali Baba's neighborhood. An amusing juxtaposition.

Re: tanita says
but it has been pouring and pitch dark for the past 3 days. You aren't missing anything.

The ice show was hilarious. With some excellent skating, too.

Oh my giddy aunt!
EG, I grew up with those Christmas tree lights. How the heck did you find them here in the UK?! Wow... lovely beyond words... Have a very, very merry Christmas, my friend. Happy happy! Elizabeth Kerner xx

I gave my best friend Code Name Verity for Christmas. With a sealed envelope she's not allowed to open before she finished. Inside: a Keep Calm and Carry On card, on which I'd written some of my thoughts on the book (it's a total fangirl madness - with glitter!). I'm pretty sure this is the best Christmas present. (Although, her mum actually KNITTED ME A PULLOVER!)

Merry Christmas from Finland! (SO curious about IrnBru now!)

that is a *wonderful* christmas present. And thank you for the Christmas wishes - I expect it's darker in Finland than it is here!

Don't worry about the IrnBru - it is an acquired taste. Scotland is one of the few countries in the world where the local soft drink outsells Coca-Cola (Malta is another... the local soft drink there is called Kinnie)

I can understand that what with all the writing, etc. the project of Playmobiling The Winter Prince has taken a back seat, but your kids haven't lost the touch with creative settings indeed. With lighting, from what I can see.

yeah, it's taken a back seat, but it hasn't been forgotten. I still pay for the account! I live in hope
